… is an open call to citizens for active contribution in the creation of an updated image of our town, its culture and coexistence.
The idea of Zadar Civil is to open space for the people outside of institutions, administration departments and government. By sharing stories, suggestions or inputs, civil alliance can gradually build up a network, which can then turn into a practical tool. This tool and accumulated material can be a very useful civil engine.
The largest political majority in town are nonpolitical citizens. People who have the feeling of not being able to influence media (as a generator of reality image) will become the media themselves. Citizens who do not go to theater will become a theater itself.
We invite you to become a citizen-artist. No prior experience is needed, just a good will and a wish to express your standpoint on the quality of life in this town. Theatre has always been a place that speaks up about social issues, those weakest of us… art is a possibility of peaceful and smart protest, not a fun activity for the well-paying guests.
Let’s put theatre back to its rightful place, join our crew in the effort of reclaiming our space.
JOIN ONE OF OUR INITIATIVES!
Together we can turn your thought or an idea into public speech by means of acting, choir, poetry or prose, or as it nowadays goes by a somewhat prostituted name - performance art.
No prior experience needed - each one of us has an unrevealed talent in our souls and hearts.
Workshops
ZADAR CIVIL IN A CONTEMPORARY WORKING CLASS “BATTLER’S OPERA”
…which is on of the first hip-hop operas in the world, uniting German street dancers and directors, rap legend Edo Maajka and the civil initiative Zadar Civil, inviting you to be main actors.
Don’t worry, you won’t need to sing arias or recitatives. The wish to speak up about the problems you face in your everyday life as citizens is enough. Express your complaints in performance arts workshops led by the experienced actress and performer Tina Keserović, together.
ZADAR CIVIL IN WORKSHOPS “BREAKING MACHOCULTURE”
9-12 AUGUST 2018
Theatremakers from Germany are visiting us and offering workshops for children, teenagers and adults that deal with questions of identity and belonging. Entitled BREAKING MACHOCULTURE* participants will ask questions, which answers only they know best:
Who am I? Where do I belong to? Do I belong in this body? What’s my essence? Am I a macho or do I want to be? And: Who gets to decide that?
The four theatre- and performance-workhops will be hold from 9. to 12. of August 2018 at different locations in Zadar, for approximately five hours per day and are free of charge. At 12. of August there will be presentations in front of family and friends at our GET TOGETHER*: at 4pm we start the barbecue and from 5:30 on all workshops show what they’ve been working on! The venues will be announced soon.
Together we want to map the city, leave the tourists behind us, lie at the beach, climb the hills, laugh, cry, get to know us and the others, but most of all – PLAY!
Workshops with: Polyxeni Angelidou & Christopher-Fares Köhler, Marina & Paula Prados, Ronald Berger & Paul Spittler, Felix Roadkill & Philipp Schaus

ZADAR CIVIL IN EXHIBITION “US, THEM, AND THEIR COUNTRY”
Zadar citizens by birth, heritage or twist of fate, join the project “Us, Them, and Their Country” led by Jagoda Cupać, (former) citizen of Zadar, who wishes to question multiethnic identity of Zadar by talking to her fellow citizens. How one becomes and stays a Zadar citizen and who can call and feel him/herself a Zadar citizen today? Do you consider Zadar your town, but you love and hate it at the same time? Is this open call just an oxymoron to you?
After sharing your thoughts and emotions with Jagoda, they will be turned into symbolic portrait-drawings by the visual artist Nastja Kljaić. Gathered portraits will be presented as a part of an artistic project called “Strategy Development”.
ZADAR CIVIL IN THEATRE PERFORMANCE “ME, ME AND THEIR REALITY”
Pedagogue Kerstin Lehnhart will talk to women aged 70-plus from “Home for Elderly and Disabled” and compare the differences, difficulties and advantages of their youth – when they were young mothers, workers, spouses, doctors – with our generation, their daughters and granddaughters.
Fragments of interviews and conversations will be integrative part of the performance in which the main actors will be, of course – grannies themselves.
ZADAR CIVIL DATABASE
Citizens that don’t want to or for some reason cannot participate in the artistic initiatives are invited to send us a story of their own for the purposes of creating an online database Zadar civil database, a contemporary story mosaic of Zadar.
So…
Tell us a about your grandfather, grandmother, aunt, uncle or neighbor. Tell us something about the Zadar that was, and the Zadar that is. Share an anecdote from the hospital, school, bank, post office, a restaurant or a coffee shop. Tell us about injustice, mistakes, change, happiness, or just make us laugh. Tell us what you want everybody to hear about your town.
